1927 STAFF from Volume 1

The School magazine, "The Gate", # was first published* in 1927, half way through founding Headmaster, Mr Percy Langford's term.

Having acquired copies of all past older volumes from Ex-Student donations, the Committee is pleased to make the very early editions available to view, and allow us to take a peek into the life and times of our school, as it was, nigh on 100 years ago: -

#The name "The Gate", results from invited suggestions, as referred to on page 3 of the first edition. The student is shown to be from Form E, later known as Form 2 , and later still now being Year 8.

* Initially just 6 editions, with none published during the depression years of 1933 to 1938. Publications recommenced in 1939.

Here are a few noteworthy examples of what's in store:

1930 Page 7 . This building was moved from The Dandenong (East) Primary School quite soon after the opening of the first stage of DHS in 1920. It had various "Lives", being used as the boys locker Room annd Gym in the 1950s/'60s. The building can be glimpsed at the rear of the main School in the above front page of the 1927 Gate.

Announcement of Mr Langford's Engagement.

Extract from 1951 edition providing useful detail concerning formation of the first alumni group to be named the Ex-Students Association. All others had been styled Old Pupils Association. (RVS would refer to Richard Speed, a co-editor of the Magazine C0mmittee)
